Our research labs specialize in a diverse array of critical health areas, including cancer research, cardiovascular disease, and drug discovery, with a focus on developing innovative therapies and treatments. We also investigate metabolic disorders, diabetes, neurological disorders, and oral health, striving to advance both preventative and therapeutic strategies for these conditions. Through our work in precision medicine and reproductive medicine research, we aim to personalize treatment approaches, enhancing patient outcomes and addressing unique health challenges on an individual level.
Recent research has made significant strides in understanding and treating various cancers. A corrigendum to the study on innovative approaches in human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-driven cancer therapy highlights the precision and repurposing of treatments to enhance efficacy. The plasticity of cancer cells, which contributes to tumor heterogeneity and drug resistance, has been explored in depth, revealing the complex cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms involved. Combining dasatinib and BMS-202 has shown promise in targeting HER2-positive breast cancer cells by inhibiting key molecular pathways. In Qatar, a nationwide study evaluated the response of HER2-low non-metastatic breast cancer to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, providing real-world insights. Advances in diagnosing and treating pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, including molecular profiling, have been reviewed to improve patient outcomes. Research on skull base plasmacytoma in young patients has provided valuable radiological and clinical perspectives. The impact of chronic myeloid leukemia treatments on male fertility has been examined, offering future perspectives for patient care. Studies on Mangifera indica L. kernel extract have demonstrated its potential in inhibiting lung cancer cell viability and inducing apoptosis. Bortezomib's anti-cancer activity through the Skp2/p53 axis in non-melanoma skin cancer cells and C. elegans has been elucidated. Additionally, genomic newborn screening for pediatric cancer predisposition syndromes, the efficacy and safety of selinexor for multiple myeloma, and the role of transcription factors in targeting EMT and cancer stem cells have been investigated. Novel therapies, such as nitric oxide-releasing nanoparticles for heart failure and the safety of treatments in chronic lymphocytic leukemia during intermittent fasting, have also been explored. Chronotherapy in head and neck cancer, conditional estimates in cancer epidemiology, AI and ML in myelodysplastic syndrome diagnosis, and curcumin as a therapeutic candidate for cancer are among the other significant areas of research. The role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in chronic myeloid leukemia management and the cardiotoxic effects of imatinib and ponatinib in zebrafish embryos have also been studied, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of cancer treatment and management.

Our recent studies have provided valuable insights into various aspects of cardiovascular health and treatment. Research on women-focused cardiac rehabilitation programs has identified key enablers for broader implementation. In Qatar, a retrospective analysis evaluated warfarin management in primary health care centers, revealing important findings. The ASCEND trial examined thromboxane biosynthesis and its implications for future events in diabetes. A systematic review assessed native myocardial T1 mapping for early detection of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity in cancer patients.
Metabolomic profiling has identified key metabolites associated with hypertension progression, while another study explored the association between antioxidant metabolites and brain natriuretic peptides in insulin-resistant individuals. Research has also shown that blood homocysteine levels mediate the link between blood lead levels and cardiovascular mortality. The role of p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK) in tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)-induced cardiotoxicity has been investigated, along with factors affecting healthcare provider referrals to heart function clinics.
Reviews have focused on thromboembolism prevention in atrial fibrillation with immune thrombocytopenia, polypharmacy phenogroups in chronic heart failure, and the accuracy of genetic-guided warfarin dosing algorithms. Studies have also examined the impact of the MIF -173G/C variant on cardiovascular disease risk, the role of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and the effects of higher egg consumption on cardiovascular disease. Additionally, research has highlighted the cost-effectiveness of ibuprofen versus other treatments for patent ductus arteriosus in preterm neonates and the benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors for cardiovascular outcomes post-acute coronary syndrome.

Our research spans a diverse range of topics, focusing on innovative solutions and comprehensive analyses to address critical health challenges. We are revolutionizing cardiovascular health with nano encapsulated omega-3 fatty acids, offering a nano-solution approach that promises enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Our work also delves into the potential anti-tumorigenic properties of various medicinal plants, exploring their effectiveness against common cancer types. We are unlocking the therapeutic potential of the BCL-2 associated protein family by investigating BCL-2 inhibitors in cancer therapy. Additionally, we evaluate nanoparticulate vaccine formulations for effective antigen presentation and T-cell proliferation, using advanced in vitro assays.
Our studies include the anticancer potential and molecular targets of pristimerin in human malignancies, and we examine the role of estrogen receptors in the gender bias observed in Raynaud's phenomenon. We apply proteomics for novel drug discovery and risk prediction optimization in stroke and myocardial infarction, providing a comprehensive review of in-human studies. Our research on new generation anti-obesity pharmacotherapy assesses its role as a companion or competitor to metabolic bariatric surgery.
We investigate the structure, function, and genetic mutations of the BRCA1 gene, particularly its vulnerable C-terminal BRCT domain, and its links to the diagnosis and treatment of breast and ovarian cancer. Our work on omega-3 fatty acids navigates the challenges and innovations for bone health and healthy aging. We also explore the selective activation of G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 and its potential to attenuate atherosclerosis.
Our research extends to evaluating the efficacy of surface-coated versus encapsulated influenza antigens in nanoparticle-based intranasal vaccines, and the microRNA-mediated regulation of LDL receptors, highlighting their biological and pharmacological implications. We study the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on post-surgical complications in trauma patients, focusing on mechanisms, nutrition, and challenges.

Our recent research at Qatar University has provided valuable insights into various health-related topics. We have explored the impact of prenatal psychological distress on gene expression in human placentas, highlighting the importance of maternal mental health. Studies on body fat distribution have examined the protective role of gluteal-femoral fat against metabolic disorders, offering new perspectives on obesity management. We have identified serum metabolic signatures as potential biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and investigated the role of vitamin D in influencing HDL-associated proteins and inflammatory mediators in dyslipidemia. Research using data from the Qatar Biobank cohort has studied the risk and determinants of sarcopenia in people with diabetes. Additionally, we have focused on the association between antioxidant metabolites and brain natriuretic peptides in insulin-resistant individuals, and the effects of metformin on fatty acid profiles in type 2 diabetes patients. Our studies have also projected the societal health and economic burden of cardiovascular diseases in Qatar's type 2 diabetes population over a 10-year period. Furthermore, we have identified novel hypertension biomarkers using explainable AI and metabolomics, and examined the progression of coronary artery disease. These efforts underscore our commitment to advancing health research and improving public health outcomes.

Our research delves into a variety of critical health issues, with a focus on innovative approaches and comprehensive analyses to improve patient outcomes. We have explored peripheral inflammatory and metabolic markers as potential biomarkers in treatment-resistant schizophrenia, providing insights from a Qatari cohort. Our work addresses the challenges in managing nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease in low-resourced settings, highlighting the unavailability of newer drugs. We have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on prenatal psychological distress and its impact on 11β-HSD2 gene expression in human placentas, offering valuable insights into maternal and fetal health.
Our studies on posterior circulation ischemic stroke provide detailed insights into its incidence, clinical features, and outcomes, utilizing data from a large multiethnic stroke database. The QPGx-CARES initiative focuses on enhancing pharmacogenetics clinical applications and research strategies in Qatar. We have assessed the predictive value of the neutrophil percentage to albumin ratio for ICU admission in ischemic stroke patients, and reviewed the history and challenges of clozapine utilization in the Arab world.
Our research also includes functional priorities of individuals with spinal cord injury from a Saudi Arabian perspective, and the impact of clinical versus fixed warfarin dosing on the quality of anticoagulation, as demonstrated in the ClinFix trial. We have identified differentially expressed miRNA profiles in serum-derived extracellular vesicles from patients with acute ischemic stroke, and developed TB-CXRNet, a technique for detecting tuberculosis and drug-resistant tuberculosis using chest X-ray images.
We have delineated the molecular mechanisms of hippocampal neurotoxicity induced by chronic administration of synthetic cannabinoid AB-FUBINACA in mice, and utilized genomic insights and advanced machine learning to characterize autism spectrum disorder biomarkers and genetic interactions. Our early warning tool for predicting mortality risk in COVID-19 patients leverages machine learning to enhance clinical decision-making.
Our research on the role of religiosity types in the phenomenology of hallucinations provides a large cross-sectional community-based study in a predominantly Muslim society. We have investigated the anti-cancer activity of bortezomib through the regulation of the Skp2/p53 axis in non-melanoma skin cancer cells and C. elegans, and conducted a clinical trial on the pharmacokinetics of single-dose rivaroxaban in obese versus non-obese subjects.

Recent advancements in dental research have led to significant findings across various domains. Studies have explored the influence of horizontal glass fiber posts on the fracture strength of endodontically treated teeth, and innovative techniques for dental floss ties for rubber dam isolation. Electrochemical decontamination methods for titanium dental implants have been evaluated, alongside the novel breath biopsy technology for identifying head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Meta-analyses have assessed the impact of partial ferrule on fracture resistance and the outcomes of auto-transplanted premolars following traumatic dental injuries. Comprehensive reviews on tooth autotransplantation, including bibliometric analyses and case reports involving 3D-printed replicas, have provided valuable insights. Additionally, critical appraisals of diagnostic criteria and guidelines, as well as studies on the effectiveness of various dental treatments and techniques, continue to push the boundaries of evidence-based practice in dentistry.

Our recent research at Qatar University spans a wide range of health-related topics, providing valuable insights and advancements. We have explored the impact of prenatal psychological distress on gene expression in human placentas, emphasizing the importance of maternal mental health. Studies on body fat distribution have examined the protective role of gluteal-femoral fat against metabolic disorders, offering new perspectives on obesity management. Our research has identified serum metabolic signatures as potential biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and investigated the role of vitamin D in influencing HDL-associated proteins and inflammatory mediators in dyslipidemia.
Using data from the Qatar Biobank cohort, we have studied the risk and determinants of sarcopenia in people with diabetes. Additionally, our research has focused on the association between antioxidant metabolites and brain natriuretic peptides in insulin-resistant individuals, and the effects of metformin on fatty acid profiles in type 2 diabetes patients. We have projected the societal health and economic burden of cardiovascular diseases in Qatar's type 2 diabetes population over a 10-year period.
Furthermore, we have identified novel hypertension biomarkers using explainable AI and metabolomics, and examined the progression of coronary artery disease. Our studies underscore our commitment to advancing health research and improving public health outcomes.

Our research encompasses a wide range of topics, focusing on innovative approaches and comprehensive analyses to improve health outcomes. We have conducted an explorative scoping review on sensitive objective markers for measuring aspirin responsiveness in pregnancy, highlighting the need for standardized dosing and reliable biomarkers. Our study on COVID-19 and male fertility examines the short- and long-term impacts of asymptomatic versus symptomatic infection on male reproductive potential, revealing significant differences in hormone levels and semen parameters.
We have also evaluated the effectiveness and satisfaction with a microsurgical testicular sperm extraction knowledge and skills masterclass, demonstrating significant improvements in participants' knowledge and skills. Our research on the mammalian sperm factor phospholipase C zeta underscores its critical role in early embryo division and pregnancy in both humans and mice.
In the realm of andrology, we have explored the barriers and enablers to enhancing research capacity through online training, as part of the Global Andrology Forum. Additionally, we have investigated the effect of low-dose aspirin on platelet function during pregnancy, providing insights into its safety and efficacy.
Our work on the structure, roles, functioning, and outcomes of the Global Andrology Forum highlights the success of this online collaborative research model. We have also delved into the structure and function relationship of sperm PLCZ1, emphasizing its importance in oocyte activation and male fertility.
Furthermore, we have introduced scrotal base distance as a new key genital measurement in males with hypospadias and cryptorchidism, offering a sensitive biomarker for assessing fetal endocrine effects. Our studies on ultrasound diagnosis of infections in pregnancy and non-invasive assessment of fetal lung maturity provide valuable tools for improving maternal and fetal health outcomes.
